What is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of hands-on healing using universal life energy channelled through the practitioner to the recipient helping to harmonise body, mind and spirit.
Reiki is a Japanese name consisting of 2 words. The word Rei means "universal," or present everywhere.
"Ki" means life force energy. Other names for ki include Chi, as the Chinese call it, and Prana in Sanskrit.
As long as something is alive, ki circulates through it and around it. When ki dies, the life force departs and the organism dies. Ki is also the source from which emotions, thoughts, and spiritual life are drawn.
The Chinese have studied ki, or "chi," for thousands of years and place great importance on it. Ki is used by practitioners of the martial arts for mental development and physical training. It is used in Pranayama (meditative breathing exercises) and by shamans in many cultures for divination, psychic awareness, and healing.
Ki is the non-physical energy used by all healers, is present all around us and can be accumulated and guided by the mind.
How does Reiki heal?
It is believed that one is more vulnerable to stress and illness when reserves of life energy are low. Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negativities are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In doing so Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
What happens during a treatment?
The Reiki treatment begins by you lying down on a treatment couch. You remain fully clothed, with your shoes removed. Then the Reiki practitioner will gently rest their hands upon you, in a series of positions from the crown of the head to the feet. Each hand position is held for a few minutes, sometimes longer, and during this time energy will flow into you, drawn according to your need, helping to balance your energy system. This can release stress, soothe pain, and promote your body’s natural ability to heal itself. As the energy flows, most people will feel warmth, or heat, or tingling from the Practitioner's hands. It is usually a very relaxing experience: some people fall asleep. Other sensations may include seeing coloured lights or feeling as if you are floating. Sometimes people have an "emotional release" - feeling quite emotional or tearful for a little while during the treatment - as emotional turmoil is brought to the surface to be released and dissipated.
While Reiki is very effective, it is not a miracle cure, and the effects of Reiki treatments tend to build up cumulatively. To experience the full benefit of Reiki we would recommend that you have four to six full Reiki treatments. Reiki generally produces long-term beneficial changes, however, once you have felt how wonderful it feels, you may want to decide to have regular 'top-up' sessions, or you might want to visit your Reiki practitioner if and when you feel that you would benefit from another treatment.
No matter what your particular complaint, the general effect of a course of Reiki treatments seems to be to make you feel more 'laid back': calmer, less stressed and better able to cope. Reiki boosts energy levels, raise spirits, and make you feel more positive about things. Stressful situations seem to wash over you.
